While driving the other day, I saw this homeless guy.  Not a big surprise, there are plenty of them in Austin.  This particular intersection is a two lane traffic, 4 total, at Winsor and Lamar, heading east.  There’s no median so the guy was standing on the sidewalk to the right.  I can’t help but imagine that he must not be doing very well.  Not b/c he’s homeless and peddling, but the fact that he picked a horrific location.

The right lane is not even paying attention to him.  They’re all looking and anticipating for a break in traffic so they can make a right turn.  The left lane can’t really see him b/c the cars on the right lane is blocking the view of him.  Even if they do, it’s much harder to reach across a passenger seat, especially an empty one, to give him change.

It made me think of some marketing strategies, particularly w/ traffic flow and how some executives fail to see things from the customers’ perspective.

We all know at least one gas station that is just either really hard to pull into or leave because of oncoming traffic.  There’s one I’m thinking of on I think Braker and 183 in Austin.  If you are not heading northeast on Braker, you either have to 1) take a u-turn under the highway and cut straight through 3, 4 lanes of traffic at a yield sign or 2) wait for the left turn signal, make a left, go past the station, wait for another signal so you can u-turn back.  I usually just go to a different one 😛

For anybody out there that’s looking to start their own business: think about how you need to position your product/service/idea.  Are you going to get the traffic and eyeballs?  Obviously it’s different for a product in a grocery store compared to say a website, but you have to think about that.  CONSTANTLY.

Another lesson, which is also one of the Dale Carnegie principles, is to try honestly to see things from the other person’s point of view.  What do you think people see, think, react when they see your product?  Put yourself in other people’s shoes.  I can’t tell you how many products I’ve seen at trade shows, or have people approach me to either get my thoughts or ask for a quote to produce it that is just flat out stupid.  C’mon man?  Have you thought this through?  What need does this product fill out in the market?  And how are people suppose to use this?  It doesn’t seem weird/awkward/even more difficult to you?
